Après un concert enflammé de Madlib à Molenbeek ce jeudi et après avoir croisé celui-ci en ville par le plus grand des hasards, nous nous sommes dirigés le soir-même vers le cinéma UGC De Brouckere où se trouvait alors ScienZe et FreshDaily qui venaient d’aller voir le film “Thor” au cinéma pendant que Chuk Le Garçon était resté dans la maison de Shungu à faire des beats en compagnie d’une petite tasse de thé et de son herbe d’inspiration. C’est à cet endroit même que nous avons voulu leur partager nos délices du terroir : les fameuses bières belges ! Verdict : la Leffe 9° et la Bush l’ont emporté haut la main et ont écrasé de manière impitoyable la Kasteel Rouge qui aurait, d’après eux, un goût de médicament. Un premier contact qui s’avérait être révélateur pour la suite.

After a show ignited by the pure energy of none other than Madlib, Thursday evening in Molenbeek area, and after having encountered the magician by the purest of luck in the streets of downtown Brussels, we moved on to UGC De Brouckère. There, awaiting us, were ScienZe and Fresh Daily, fresh out of seeing the new Thor movie while their acolyte, Chuck Le Garçon, was left on his own at Shungu’s place, making beats with a cup of tea and his sacred herb of inspiration. It was at this very place that we chose to share with them the delicacies of our land: the famous belgian beers! Verdict: the 9° Leffe and the Bush clearly won the battle and put to rest the Kasteel Rouge, found to have a taste reminiscent of bad medicine. A first encounter that would play its role in the near future.
It was a windy and rainy Saturday evening, the ones we really love out here in Belgium, as splatters of water would accompany me as far as Luxemburg Place, and more precisely to the Da BlueFunk Apartment. There, we were met by the filming crew of BeatChronic, already hard at work: our sound engineer going through the tiniest cable in order to obtain the most satisfying audio quality; the cameramen busy, trying to focus their attention on the smallest details of the room… All the while, the artists were still sending their bellies to deep heaven, down below at the resto-bar, and the crowd was slowly gathering itself to that mysterious apartment, hidden at the very center of a peculiar place.

Having given to ScienZe and Fresh Daily, two nights before, a list of our Top 3 belgian beers (La Chouffe, the Rochefort 10° and the Triple Karmeliet), there were no surprises when we met Fresh Daily with a Triple Karmeliet in hand and satisfaction clear on his face, surely infused by the tenderness of the beer; at least the list found its use! It was only after this short preamble that Shungu and Boa got on stage on the drums of future, soul, beat, trap and hip-hop music…
London chose to take the stage at their exit, with its native crew “Nihilismus”, which managed to take the title of Biggest Revelation of the night. The overall production of Saddler The Kid is filled with character and is greatly inspired, especially by the drums of the late Jay Dee and the culture of bass, which is deeply incremented in the United Kingdoms; an explosive mix that would soon raise the temperature to new levels. A little detail characteristic of UK sound systems: the emcee and the singer were both standing at the sides of the DJ, and not in front of him… A great picture of equality between the instrumental and the vocal sides of the music. From what we gathered from Ramer One (emcee of Nihilismus), he apparently performed half of his show in freestyle, with skills that would have you believe otherwise, while Pearl (singer of Nihilismus) managed to captivate and hypnotise the crowd with a sweet and bewitching voice, which had us vaguely reminiscing of Muhsinah’s. The war, which held the fate of our love for Hip-Hop, had definitely begun…

Chuck Le Garçon (beat maker) then took place, ready to make the crowd move with the help of his drum machine and his SP-404. Which he did. Right after this already over-the-top performance, ScienZe came on stage, full of energy, making direct contact with his crowd, especially with his tracks Hero and Enjoy Tonight. After some difficulties encountered with his mic, Fresh Daily hurried on stage, restless, impatient to kick it on, all the while moving the crowd around to maximise his range of actions. He then went on sending us big lyrical slaps, and just as his name suggests, he has an uncanny ability to find the freshest gems unearthed by Beat makers, the ones who are working like there were no tomorrows in the darkness of their pits… He traded bars, for example, on “Moonshoes”, composed by Samiyam, and we can tell you that this feat requires a certain amount of audacity. While performing “Easy”, he managed to separate the crowd in two distinct opposites, then had both sides interact with each other while sometimes joining one, running around or popping-up at unexpected places. Slowly though and despite the huge enthusiasm showed by the public, the performances came to an end as Ramer One took the stage one last time for a DJ set that would make the transition seem natural.

As they say, every good thing must come to an end, and with it came the time for us to find our way home even though the party was still going hard: Fresh Daily, busy dancing with a glass filled with whiskey in hand, all the while chilling with a girl; ScienZe, also in a great mood, busy getting the most of his belgian experience with the people who actually live in Belgium; and the rest of the crowd, still deeply transcended by a lingering feeling of glee.
We could conclude by saying that the vibe remained at its peak all along the night, with an audience more than receptive to the potential of the artists, and with the artists more than willing to be filled by the good energy that Brussels offered them. Da Bluefunk Apartment, having already welcomed such artists as Guilty Simpson, Moka Only, Jesse Boykins and Homeboy Sandman, was again the perfect location for this type of event. A room so modestly arranged that the idea of adding a platform inside for the artists would be ludicrous, for the proximity between them and the crowd can only be optimal with the room already set up as it is; an intricate system of lights that thrusts you into a friendly atmosphere.
On what he would say upon his return in New-York about his stay in Brussels, Fresh Daily had this to say : “I will never forget this night, it was really crazy. Nor the belgian beers. And even less the chocolate.”

C’était un samedi soir pluvieux et froid comme on les aime en Belgique, qui se chargea de me tenir compagnie jusqu’à la Place du Luxembourg et plus précisément au Da BlueFunk Apartment. Là, où j’ai retrouvé l’équipe vidéo de BeatChronic en pleine préparation : l’ingénieur son en train de fouiller les moindres câbles afin d’obtenir une qualité audio des plus satisfaisantes, les cadreurs occupés à focaliser leur attention sur le moindre détail qui composait la salle… Tout ça pendant que nos artistes se sustentaient au resto-bar d’en dessous tandis que le public déambulait au fur et à mesure vers cet appartement caché au beau milieu d’une place.
Aller, il est à présent temps de se plonger dans leur univers musical et ce à l’aide de cette vidéo fraîchement sortie !

Ayant donné une liste l’avant-veille à ScienZe et Fresh Daily de nos 3 bières favorites (La Chouffe – Rochefort 10° – Triple Karmeliet), nous avons retrouvé Fresh Daily avec une Triple Karmeliet en main et un visage satisfait par la tendresse de cette bière, comme quoi cette liste aura tout de même été utile ! Ce n’est qu’après ce bref intermède que Shungu et Boa rentrèrent en piste à coups de future-soul-beat-trapmusic-hiphop…
Et c’est la ville de Londres qui s’est occupé de prendre le relais avec le collectif “Nihilismus” qui s’est avérée être une grosse révélation. Les productions de Saddler The Kid ont énormément de caractère et sont grandement inspirées notamment par les drums de Jay Dee ainsi que par la culture des basses grandement présente en Grande-Bretagne, un mélange explosif qui s’empressa de faire monter la température. Petit détail typique des soundsystems anglais, le emcee et la chanteuse étaient tous deux placés aux côtés du DJ et non devant lui, une belle image d’égalité entre le caractère instrumental et vocal de la musique. D’après les dires du emcee “Ramer One”, celui-ci aurait apparemment presté la moitié de son show en freestyle et ce dans une aisance considérable tandis que la chanteuse “Pearl” est parvenue à hypnotiser l’attention de la salle à l’aide sa voix douce et envoûtante, une voix qui m’a vaguement fait penser à Muhsinah. La guerre pour l’amour du hip-hop avait bel et bien commencé…

Ensuite, Chuk Le Garçon (beatmaker) s’installa avec sa drum machine et sa SP-404 pour prendre la relève et à son tour faire vibrer la foule. Ce sera juste après ce live mouvementé que ScienZe entra en jeu avec une énergie débordante et une interaction spontanée avec son public notamment sur la track “Hero” et “Enjoy Tonight”. Après un maigre problème de micro, Fresh Daily s’empressa avec impatience de kicker sur le mic’ tout en écartant la foule afin d’optimiser son espace vital. Celui-ci nous a envoyé des grosses patates lyricales en pleine face et tout comme son nom l’indique, il a une incroyable faculté à dégoter les pépites fraîchement pondues de nos beatmakers travaillant sans relâche dans les sous-sols les plus ténébreux… Il s’est attaqué par exemple “Moonshoes” de Samiyam, autant vous dire directement qu’il faut une certaine audace pour réaliser ce genre d’exploit. C’est lors de sa track “Easy” qu’il se fraya un passage à travers le public, séparant celui-ci en deux parties distinctes afin de les faire interagir tout au long de son morceau. Le show prit peu à peu fin malgré l’enthousiasme du public, mais ce n’était que partie remise car Ramer One prit rapidement le contrôle des platines pour assurer le reste de la soirée,… Finalement, comme le dit si bien la citation : “toute bonne chose a une fin”, il était temps pour moi de rentrer à la maison bien que la soirée battait encore de son aile : Fresh Daily occupé à danser avec son verre de whisky en main tout en délirant avec une fille, ScienZe également en pleine forme en train de profiter de chaque moment avec quiconque et le reste de la foulée plongée dans une allégresse totale.

En gros, l’ambiance fut à son apogée du début à la fin de la soirée, le public on ne peut plus réceptif face au potentiel des artistes et les artistes, eux, furent habités par les émotions et les good vibes que leur a offert Bruxelles. Cet endroit ayant déjà accueilli auparavant des artistes tels que Moka Only, Homeboy Sandman, Guilty Simpson, Jesse Boykins etc. convenait particulièrement bien à ce type de soirée. Je m’explique, une contenance de la salle tellement modeste qu’y mettre une estrade pour les artistes s’avérait ridicule, renforçant fortement la proximité établie entre les artistes et le public.
Alors que l’éclairage vous plonge dans une atmosphère conviviale et unique propre à l’endroit. Pour le mot de la fin, j’ai pu questionner Fresh Daily sur ce qu’il allait raconter à New-York sur son séjour à Bruxelles et celui-ci m’a alors répondu :
“Je n’oublierai jamais cette soirée, c’était vraiment dingue, ni les bières belges et encore moins le chocolat”.
